About Chris
Implant Dentist Chris Oxley has over fifteen years of implant experience as both a practitioner and teacher coupled with a wealth of experience of dentures making him a dentures.org.uk expert.
Chris qualified from Leeds University Dental School in 1987 and became involved in implant dentistry in 1995. He began restoring implants in secondary care to assist in denture stabilisation but also using implants to treat trauma and cancer patients in Leicester. Soon afterwards he began placing and restoring implants in practice. Much of his implant training was at the University of Sheffield but Chris later went on to the Diploma in Implant Dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2007.
He teaches implantology at the University of Sheffield at post-graduate level to general dental practitioners on both the practical courses and the Diploma/Masters program. He is involved in teaching and examining at undergraduate and post-graduate level at the University of Sheffield and along with his implant diploma he has a Diploma in General Dental Practice from the Royal College of Surgeons of England and a post-graduate qualification in Medical Education from the University of Nottingham.
A member of the Association of Dental Implantology and regular delegate at international conferences, he has a training practice in Leicester for graduate dentists and is a mentor for Clinical Dental Technicians.

What is a dental implant and what material is it made from?
A dental implant is a small titanium screw that serves as a replacement for the root portion of a missing natural tooth. Dental implants can be placed in either the upper or lower jaw. Due to the biocompatible properties of Titanium, the individual dental implants fuse with the jaw bone in a process known as 'osseointegration' becoming a solid anchor for replacement dentures. Dental implants can also be used when replacing single teeth and multiple missing teeth.
Titanium is a silver-white precious metal, proven to be completely biocompatible. More than being in harmony with your body, titanium actually stimulates bone growth and improves the health of your jaw. In dentistry it is used as a basic material for dental implants because of it's high strength and resistance to corrosion.
Is the surgery for dental implants painful?
With any type of surgery, there can be some discomfort following the procedure. However, most implants are placed with a simple local anaesthetic and are therefore entirely painless to place.
Most patients are surprised by how little discomfort they experience during and after implant placement and many remark that the placement of an implant is by far preferable to having a tooth extracted. Clearly any discomfort may be more if multiple implants are placed but fortunately, a lower denture can usually be stabilised with just two implants.
Are dental implants successful?
Since they were developed in the early 1960s, the use of dental implants has been investigated in thousands of university and scientific studies.
With more than four decades of clinical experience and millions of patients treated worldwide, the long-term studies observing dental implant solutions clearly confirm a high success rate of over 95% for individual dental implants.
Appropriate care, together with good treatment planning and correct insertion of the implant, are important requirements for long-term success.
Just like natural teeth, dental implants also require regular check-ups and conscientious oral hygiene by the patient.
