dear Sandra, I am having a problem with my gum and denture. I am actually having two but one is immediate, I hae a cut on my gum, I cant remember cutting it myself but this is not impossible, however it is right where my dentures stop and this naturally irritates it which means not only does it hurt but that it wont heal whilst im wearing my dentures and im not being funny but do I have to walk around with no top teeth as a result of a cut? what do you think. secondly the denture doesn’t actually fit very well and may be the cause of the cut, its certainly the cause of the play in the the dentures that is now irritating the cut. I have an upper set of dentures for all the the top row, my dentist mentioned a re-line? i missed it briefly then realised later so I popped on here, what is a re-line could I ask? thanks for your help
Yes you are correct in saying that nothing will heal whilst your wearing your denture and if it doesnt fit well then unfortunately until you get the denture to fit better or adjusted then you will continue to have the same recurring problem. To start I would see your local CDT who will be able to adjust your denture so that you stop cutting into your tissue and causing you pain. Once this has healed and calmed down they will then be able to take a reline impression inside your denture so that the denture can be made to fit snugly against your tissues again. You will be without your dentures for a day or so whilst this is done but the end result will be a denture that wont move and cause you discomfort. The reason for the denture losing its fit is purely down to the bone resorption that occurrs naturally after you have had teeth removed. I hope this helps.
