After root canal treatment I need crowns. Is this a lengthy process?

May 14th, 2012
Q.

Dear Dr I had the first part of a root canal done on one of my molars in September 2006. At the time I was living in the US and had to pay for everything so I stopped short of getting the crown done. I now live in the UK and want to get a crown put on as the stub (not sure what the official name of whats left is) just looks unsightly. Its sort of yellowed out and the top has some sort of brown colouring that wont come off. There is no pain though. If I go to the dentist can they just make another crown for me and put it on? Or is there some sort of lengthy process associated?

Am I too young to consider crowns?

March 2nd, 2012
Q.

Hi, I’m wondering if you could give me some help and advice. I have had problems with my teeth since I was young, the upper front two came through crossed. I had braces to fix this, however my teeth had been left crossed so long that some of the tooth had worn away due to decay that could not be reached, leaving me with bits missing from my front teeth. Some time after having my braces removed I got an absess over my upper front right tooth and was forced to have the nerve removed. Unfortunatly, the absess had already spread to the upper front left tooth, and that nerce had to be removed too. As you can imagine I have always felt very self concious about my teeth and planned to have cosmetic dentistry when I was older. Recently this has become finacially possible and I booked a consultation at my own dentist. However, I was told that I am not a suitable candidate for crowns, which is what I am told I would need, as I have had the nerves of both teeth removed, and any crowns fitted would be likley so fall out taking my teeth with them. I was also told I am too young to be thinking about crowns, I am 20. Is this really the case? Will my teeth fall out if I have crowns? and are there any options left open to me? I’m deperate to get them fixed. Thanks

Will the tooth extraction hurt and am I better off getting a crown or a bridge?

March 2nd, 2012
Q.

I am due to have a tooth removed and a crown fitted but was wondering whether an extraction of a tooth with a previous root canal treatment less painfull than extraction of a normal decayed tooth with no previous treatment? Root canal therapy prove no use after two years and I am having an extraction.I know I will have local anesthetics, but they sometimes fail to work and I have experinced this before, when they failed to numb the pain completely. also on side not if i have as crown to replace the one missing tooth would it not be cheaper to have a bridge from another tooth or is this not common practice? thanks

A filling won’t work so should I have a crown?

February 21st, 2012
Q.

One of my top incisors has been filled at the rear of the tooth. this was apparently a result of my diet which left a cavity on the back of my tooth. However, the front of the tooth looks perfect. The filling recently came out and the dentist tried to refill it but the filling came out after a few days. He has now said I need a crown but as the tooth is visibly perfect I am concerned if a. I need a crown and b. will it mean effectively removing a perfectly good tooth, you can see he issue I am faced with! and also is there an alternative. many thanks

Can bad hygiene at a dentist surgery cause an oral abscess?

February 17th, 2012
Q.

Can bad hygiene at a dentist surgery cause an abscess to form after having a new crown fitted 9 months previously? A total of 6 crowns were renewed for cosmetic reasons which have all had to be removed 2 years later and replaced with a denture. Prior to this the original crowns caused no problems and were fitted 20 years ago. This one abscess has caused major deterioration in the gums and each crown that has had to be extracted has had an abscess on the root. When the crowns were renewed I was informed there was no sign of gum problems and yet 9 months later there was rapid deterioration, what are your thoughts on this? thanks

I have been given a substandard level of dental care. What can I do?

February 8th, 2012
Q.

I had a consultation for private orthodontic treatment to correct my misaligned top arch which I hate. I was advised that my old amalgam fillings showed decay on the surrounding tooth and had cracked along with a badly fitted upper crown that will need to be replaced and a Cerec restoration on an un-finished crown!!! All this before orthodontic treatment can begin! However I am astounded that I have just had a crown fitted via NHS treatment and he has failed to address ANY of these issues. I had advised him of my concerns on my initial consultation I knew the lower fillings needed replacing but had no idea how bad my upper teeth were being as I cannot see them! He has not attempted to correct the fillings nor address the ill fitted crown and has totally ignored the un-finished crown!!! I am extremely upset and distressed by the matter what should I do???

My crown is blatantly a different colour to that of my teeth?

January 17th, 2012
Q.

Hi I went to get a new crown fitted today only I am less than pleased with the labs work. They have dreadfully mismatched the colour which the attending dentist (my own is on holiday) recognised and is going to get fixed. Aside from the colour I am also unhappy about the shape, the outline shape seems ok but it feels too thick at the sides bottom and top, additionally it sticks out so much at the back I am unable to bite down on my molars without my lower teeth pressing very firmly against the new crown. I can also feel a sharp edge at my gumline on the back. I have posted some pictures at (http://picasaweb.google.com/davidlibbyrachel/MyNewCrown#)…what are your thoughts? I dont want to moan my dentists face off if . However if there are labs out there that can produce better work I would really like to know before I pay my final bill. Thanks

My dentist has never done a crown before and has made a mess of this, what do I do?

January 17th, 2012
Q.

Hi, I have recently had a crown and veneer fitted on my two front teeth. After only a week my crown came out. My dentist has put it back in with a stronger cement however when she was putting it back in she has put it in too far forwrd so now my crown sticks out further than my other teeth. My dentist has said she can take it out and re position it back in but i will have to be numbed and there is the chance the root might crak or the crown might crack. also she has not done this before. Do you have any suggestions as to what i can do. i m really unhappy with the way it looks any advice you could give me would be great. Thanks

Did my dentist really need to crown my tooth after root canal treatment?

January 16th, 2012
Q.

Hi Chris, could you help me with some of the issues i have had with crown? basically I had a root canal done on my front left tooth and the tooth started to darken. My dentist recommended an all porcelain crown which I agreed to. It’s now approx 10 months since he installed the crown and it came out..(I bit into a piece of meat. When the crown came out I was horrified to find no tooth there..just a tiny stump. My question: did he really need to remove practically all of my tooth to crown it? My tooth just had a small cavity and it’s not like the entire tooth was decayed. Now he says that a small part of the tooth was broken but he re-installed my crown. I am so scared that it’s going to come out again…! Thank you ever so much for your time.
