Are Implant retained dentures as near to real teeth as you can get?

March 20th, 2012
Q.

Hi Mike :D I have been recommended dentures from my dentist who says that my remaining teeth aren’t in particularly good condition. I am not bothered about this as its been ominous now for some time. the eventuality of dentures doesn’t bother me but I want implants. I don’t want the dentures constantly flopping about or being removed I want them to be as near the real thing as is possible. I have also heard that having dental implants is better for a bone in my jaw (or my jaw bone full stop)? could you tell me what this- if its even true? I am hearing more and more about Implants and need to get the story straight thanks.

Is it normal to replace dentures after 1-2 years and why?

March 5th, 2012
Q.

Hello MR Brindle. I have a quick few questions about dentures. I have been wearing mine for nine months, this is my first set and I have been told I will have to have them changed after the two year mark for something to do with the my gums changing. I am not concerned with this. However if I have to have the first set changed after only two years, how long will the second set last? I have considered having them a few a years and then having implant retained dentures at some point. what I want to know is whether it would make a difference having them later on or not? as in, I have to have dentures for a short while before having a long life pair so my gums can adapt. Will this aply if I have implant retained ones straight away- Ie. Will implant retained dentures affect my gums the same way dentures would to being with? thanks Dr I know this is a bit messy, cheers again.

I’m not a big fan of metal clasps on dentures. Is there an alternative?

March 5th, 2012
Q.

I am going to have to have a set of partial dentures which i assume will be clasped to my rear teeth- as theyre in good health and staying. ive heard seveal tales of the clasps feeling like theyre scratching these supporting teeth- metal on metal goes through me but metal on teeth, i wouldnt be able to hack that at all! do you think you can have partial dentures implanted so they do not require the clasps or will this in itself present more issues? if not are there any other alternatives i could look at? the thought of clasps on my teeth just, i’d hate that. would i even be better off removing the last remaining teeth and having a full set of dentures in and having them implanted?

Would I be better off pulling my remaining teeth or having a partial denture?

March 2nd, 2012
Q.

Afternoon Mr Brindle. I know that as a clinical Dental Technician your are different to a dentist etc. I assume though you would need to collaborate with my dentist for example (who had been my family dentist for years) in order to see my history?
I am thinking along the lines of gum disease and gum disease. I have lost a lot f teeth due to periodontitis it’s ridiculous it really is and it annoys me, however I am now thinking of getting dentures. I a little stuck as to whether I should get partial dentures now with the knowledge that I will need to get full ones in the future or whether to pull the remaining teeth as a lot of them are probably already candidates for extraction whilst others will be soon. my main quesry is as dentures are removable would it matter if i still had gum disease whilst wearing partials? the teeth will be gone if I have full and I assume without plaque building on teeth I wont be able to get gum disease ? please could you give me your much valued opinion.

I think my partial denture has caused damage to my tooth?

March 2nd, 2012
Q.

dear expert, could you advise me on a situation I am currently in Scotland with family and will be looking to act on any advice when I return home (Bolton). I currently have an cobalt/alloy half denture on my upper jaw. I used to think it was excellent but I have noticed that where the clasp/arm is that goes around a rear left tooth there has been a lot of erosion (to the tooth) as a result the denture has lost a bit of its retention. I has left some noticeable gauges on the tooth (1st molar i think). Ive resorted to not using it as i’m worried about the tooths health ive clearly lost a lot of enamel already. To you, what does it sound like has happened here? and what could I do to rectify this situation when I return? thank you verymuch

What is the best method to keep dentures clean?

February 17th, 2012
Q.

Hi mike. I have always tried to keep my dentures clean, I have had them now for just short of two years and where they are clean they are no longer white/ivory- a natural clean colour. I was wondering what the best technique was to clean/whiten dentures. I’m sure you can do It but the only methods I read tend to read about seem like cowboy methods and other crap. I know with real teeth there are home kits and the dentist is there something similar here for dentures? thanks Dr

At what point would you advise on having a full arch of dentures?

February 17th, 2012
Q.

at what point would you say somebody needed dentures? I have millions of missing teeth on the bottom. I lost two due to decay- they were rotten as anything but the other eight were knocked out in a sport injury for which i have to have minor plastic surgery on my cheek and lip and a ninth tooth extracted as a reult of the accident. It was obviously a bit serious but my dentist has said that there is little/no significant damage to the bone and gum around any of the vacated spaces. we havent yet discussed what my options are but the dentistry itself is only a small establishment and I’m wondering whether it’d be a good Idea to go to somewhere else? If i have dentures would it be better to whack a full set in- thus removing the 5 remaining or is there a better option in terms of having dentures/implants?

Is it possible to have a Valplast upper denture done through the NHS?

February 2nd, 2012
Q.

Is it possible to have a Valplast upper denture done through the NHS dental service and if this is not actually the case can you tell me how much it would cost on privately and can it be fitted and done with immediately or do you need to wait till the gums have healed if you have to have all the teeth removed from the upper set.

How long will it take to get dentures and what can I expect?

January 27th, 2012
Q.

Hello Mike,I live up in Thistleton and I am looking to get full dentures after years of wearing partials I had the work at a dentist near Blackpool airport I cant remember the name as it was just over two years ago. I will not be returning back there as I didn’t feel comfortable there and it took to long for me to receive my dentures. I have been looking for other dental suites in the area. I was wondering how long it would take for me to receive a full set of dentures, would it be longer than it would be to receive partials? I wouldn’t be bothered but I will obviously have to have a few remaining teeth removed which will either leave me toothless or having spaces between teeth if I put my partials in momentarily. whilst im here could you advise me what to expect when I do receive them. Cheers

why would anyone still want dentures when there are implants, and when can I have them?

January 13th, 2012
Q.

Dear Mike,
If I have dentures will I have to wait any given time before considering implants or can i have them straight away after if thats what i decide? i have considered both now and have decided logically to try dentures first! I know brainwave! I have heard so many success stories about implants and dentures that it made me consider why anyone would still want normal dentures that aren’t as secure. could you please help me with this issue. i dont like the idea of being tied down to a set of dentures i dont particularly like just because ive had them implanted. what are the main benefits of dentures aside from the fact they are removable (im not to bothered about this or not having them removable i just only wish to commit to having them secured if they look OK. could you please give me your thoughts opinions on this matter. cheers
