My dentures aren’t great, can you tell me all about getting implants for them?

May 16th, 2012
Q.

hi, Im 60 and have worn dentures now for many years, approximately 30. the pair I have now I have had for around one year and they don’t fit very well, I have done a bit off online research and asked about and I have heard that basically the answer lies within dental implants and having them secured in place. would you firstly concur with this that it is a good method or is it only used in certain/more extreme cases? I need to know everything about this procedure and don’t expect you to provide me with all the details right now. but for now could you tell me whether it is possible to apply dental implants to any set of dentures or will i have to go through having even more made (would this be recommended practice or not) and how much can this process cost?

Should I have flexible or stiff denture?

May 16th, 2012
Q.

I have incisors and canines only in the upper jaw. My lower jaw has no missing tooth. I am 56 years old and a smoker. Kindly what kind of denture will be suitable for me? Flexible or stiff. My doctor says that implant is only done if I will quit smoking. I understand that smoking harms the health and I have tried couple of times but unable to quit.

I had my lower dentures secured with all on 4. Can this now be done on my upper jaw?

May 14th, 2012
Q.

Nigel. I have had my lower denture put on implants in the all on four treatment. It’s pretty amazing as to the results. I hate these people who put horror stories across the web that frighten people off. the treatment I had was absolutely amazing and I thank people like yourself for perfecting this. I was wondering though if it would be possible to have this same treatment on the upper jaw? my dentist said it was rarely used but does that mean you can’t have it or that there is a better option? I currently have a partial denture on top and don’t need to change yet I’m just finding out these things beforehand. thank you

I have now moved down south but would still like dentures. Can this happen?

May 14th, 2012
Q.

Dear expert. I had an appointment with a denture person at my old dentist who was keen for me to have dentures as soon as was possible at that time due to the condition of my teeth then. a change in circumstances meant I had to move down south immediately to be with my family. this has obviously left my own health care in a bit of a mess as it looks like I’ll be living down here for a long time yet. I need to get my teeth sorted out and have to start soon. Now I have established that I need and can have dentures is there anything else I need to know or can I just get going on having them? thanks for your help

Is there any solution to my uncomfortable, impractical set of dentures?

May 14th, 2012
Q.

Hello, Dear expert. last year I had a set of dentures made for me and couldn’t stand then. I didn’t mind that they were massively intrusive as I expected this. much was going to be the case. It was the impracticality of them. I didn’t feel I could eat anything nice (so going for meals went out the window) even things like laughing or just talking a lot (so I limited when I went out- not trips to shop or anything just out at night). they really affected my confidence and I hated them. I haven’t worn them for months properly now. I put them in to eat (at home) and that’s it they’re out then until I eat again. I figure I cannot carry on like this so I am now looking for help. would it be as straight forward as getting a new pair or is there anything I should be wary of? thank you Dr.

My dentures are nothing but bad news for my gums. What should I do?

May 14th, 2012
Q.

Hello Dr. Could I please acquire your help on an issue I have with my dentures I have had the dentures about seven months now and have continually had problems with the bottom one, When I had them made the dentist said they would eventually begin to lose grip ad my gums receded, I do not understand this notion and dont see how dentures could destroy my gum, is what he said true? anyway the issue is not that they will lose grip but that the bottom one already had, he was grumbling to himself that the bottom one was harder as he makes them himself? have you ever heard this to be the case or is it just my jaw in this instance that we’re having issues with. I do trust my dentist I know it sounds as though I am undermining him its just because I don’t understand I don’t get it? cheers

I have ill fitting dentures and would like some new ones. But I have bone loss. What can be done?

May 14th, 2012
Q.

Hi Ms Davey-Snuggs. I have been a denture wearer for four years now. I have never been particularly happy with them but I don’t think that can be helped! I have had the same pair since the start when I had my remaining teeth out. I think this may be the root of the problem I’m having with them. they seem short to me, they don’t fit the same as they used to and no matter what I do they look tatty.I was thinking about getting new- full dentures and wondered whether you could just help guide me through this as to what I should be doing and considering? any help will obviously help point me in the right direction, cheers

Would I be able to find a new dentist to help with my painful dentures?

May 14th, 2012
Q.

Hello I have just moved house and region completely I used to live down near Sussex but I now live in Sheffield.and as such I have left behind all kinds of things good and bad including my dentist. I was not on the NHS I was private. If I was on the NHS would it be possible for me to just walk into another clinic? anyway I wear partial dentures and I have got a really painful ache in one of my rear teeth on the bottom left (one of a few teeth that remain, which for a long time was used for the clasp to hold onto- I had a flexi denture fitted about nine months ago though do It hasnt been clasped). If I came to you citing this problem what would be your initial thoughts and what would you be looking for? I need to take as much informations as i can to a new dentist.

What options do I have after breaking a denture after a fall?

May 11th, 2012
Q.

Hi Mr Taylor. I last spoke to you on here about getting dentures and denture retention. Thank you for your help it did point me in the right direction. I ended up going privately to a CDT to have a unique pair made up. I then had them put on dental implants. I cannot tell you how much better they feel for me- not having to worry about them falling out when I’m chewing, how they look etc. I now have an unfortunate problem and my local CDT is away for a further week or so. I had a bad fall the other day and noticed a crack in the denture- I paid it no attention as it just looked a small crack but then when I ate the cracked area broke off completely. what options are available when fixing them now they have been implanted? thanks again

Can dentures give you wrinkles?

May 11th, 2012
Q.

Hello Mr Taylor. have had dentures now for about nine years and have started to get wrinkles. they are not ‘old’ wrinkles and if they im very unfortunate because im only 51 (fit and healthy 51 year old with otherwise good skin tightness/complexion etc)and at that they are specifically only around my mouth and im convinced its due to my dentures. the wrinkles aren’t properly deep like ‘old’ wrinkles its just the skin looks saggy and aged if you will in this area. like I said I’m convinced this is due to the dentures but can this be the case- can dentures actually age your face! it sounds ridiculous and I don’t know how they would but I can’t see anything else. I have had this set of dentures for about four years but am really happy with them as they fit brilliantly in terms of retention they are absolutely fine. what can I do?
