Is there any solution to my uncomfortable, impractical set of dentures?

May 14th, 2012
Q.

Hello, Dear expert. last year I had a set of dentures made for me and couldn’t stand then. I didn’t mind that they were massively intrusive as I expected this. much was going to be the case. It was the impracticality of them. I didn’t feel I could eat anything nice (so going for meals went out the window) even things like laughing or just talking a lot (so I limited when I went out- not trips to shop or anything just out at night). they really affected my confidence and I hated them. I haven’t worn them for months properly now. I put them in to eat (at home) and that’s it they’re out then until I eat again. I figure I cannot carry on like this so I am now looking for help. would it be as straight forward as getting a new pair or is there anything I should be wary of? thank you Dr.

My dentures are nothing but bad news for my gums. What should I do?

May 14th, 2012
Q.

Hello Dr. Could I please acquire your help on an issue I have with my dentures I have had the dentures about seven months now and have continually had problems with the bottom one, When I had them made the dentist said they would eventually begin to lose grip ad my gums receded, I do not understand this notion and dont see how dentures could destroy my gum, is what he said true? anyway the issue is not that they will lose grip but that the bottom one already had, he was grumbling to himself that the bottom one was harder as he makes them himself? have you ever heard this to be the case or is it just my jaw in this instance that we’re having issues with. I do trust my dentist I know it sounds as though I am undermining him its just because I don’t understand I don’t get it? cheers

Would I be able to find a new dentist to help with my painful dentures?

May 14th, 2012
Q.

Hello I have just moved house and region completely I used to live down near Sussex but I now live in Sheffield.and as such I have left behind all kinds of things good and bad including my dentist. I was not on the NHS I was private. If I was on the NHS would it be possible for me to just walk into another clinic? anyway I wear partial dentures and I have got a really painful ache in one of my rear teeth on the bottom left (one of a few teeth that remain, which for a long time was used for the clasp to hold onto- I had a flexi denture fitted about nine months ago though do It hasnt been clasped). If I came to you citing this problem what would be your initial thoughts and what would you be looking for? I need to take as much informations as i can to a new dentist.

What are my options when having partial dentures?

May 10th, 2012
Q.

Hello Mr Sharpling. I think I am going to need partial dentures and want to put off having full dentures for as long as possible. I had a tooth removed a while ago and left it without implant as I felt that it was only a matter of time before I had another removed in a similar region where a brdge may have been used. now though it looks as though i am going to need more than one more tooth extracting after a bad spell of gum disease. I think I have got it to a point where its receeding but the damage to a good few teeth in a concentrated area to the left of my lower jaw has been done. If they need to be removed and I have partial dentures could you please tell me what to expect and is it worth having them implanted or should I just have them as being removable and wait and see? cheers

I am a chef and concerned about my diet and impending dentures can you help?

April 20th, 2012
Q.

Hi Im worried about what i’ll be able to eat if I have dentures fitted. Im a chef in an american bar/grill kitchen and as you can tell theres a lot of steaks and sticky sauces etc. I previously went to my dentist (within the last week) who told me he was going to have to perform a large scale extraction of my teeth due to years of decay by my own admission. my grandson has braces and constantly gets irritated about what he can and cannot eat when I offer to make him something. it just made me think now im at this point in my life. will i be able to put pressure on foods and tear them- are dentures even that sharp or will tearing and biting into foods ruin my gums? I dont want my dentures being stuck in a steak butty! secondly will I have to take them out in order to clean them or is there an alternative as that will be maaaajorly annoying? is there generally any advise you can give me in terms of being able to carry on living life as normal?

What should dentures be made from?

April 13th, 2012
Q.

Hi Bill Sharpling. I am gettting dentures that are to be made of metal and acrilic? I am not the most computer literate person and have little patience trying to search the internet. I wondered if this was the correct material/most common material to use when making dentures? also is this the best material to use and are ther any general alternatives if not? thank you sir despite lambasting you with several questions :)

I am going to need to replace the remainder of my teeth and half a full denture, what options do I have for this?

April 11th, 2012
Q.

Hello Bill. I live in Sussex , I am 30 and have had to have a lot of teeth removed with the lovely promise that there is more to come! I am therefore looking at full dentures, I am currently wearing a pair of half dentures that replace most of my teeth for the time being, to be honest I really dont like the feel of these and wondered if full dentures would just be the same but more of them? if so is there any other alternative materials they can be made from or are they all the same? is there any other information you can give me on getting comfortable dentures?? thank you

Could having dental implants scupper any travelling aspirations?

March 16th, 2012
Q.

Hello :) I need a quick word about dentures. I am writing on behalf of my mother who has been a denture wearer for nearly twenty years. I have seen the recent developments in her dentures, how they look and how she tells me they feel and its certainly for the better. its quite impressive what you can now do with them. however she has now been retired for a year or two and has decided on doing a bit f travelling with my dad. she wants to take the dentures a step further and have implants for them. is there anything you would comment on when having implants related to travelling, is she going to have problems or need regular check ups and the likes for them? or are they just a straight forward, easy thing to live with. thanks

How can one pair of dentures look completely different to another?

March 2nd, 2012
Q.

Hello there! DEar Bill. I recently had a couple of remaining teeth out and had my half denture swapped for a custom made full one. I really dont like the look of these and think they look really unnatural. my freind literally just had hers done a few days after me and hers look exactly like her old teeth did, and this is something I noticed not something that was pointed out so I assume people can see how naff mine look just the same. I want to know how hers are so good.while mine look comical? is there something I have missed in the preparation stages of having dentures? I don’t know, I hate these and it winds me up! cheers Dr

Is there anything I can do to improve my denture retention?

March 2nd, 2012
Q.

Mr sharpling, hi there, My dentures have always seemed to give me issues with retaining themselves. I have now had them re-lined and they were brilliant, they fit for the first time ver. the issue is they don’t now! the re-line entertained them and me for just over a month… I am struggling to find out what I can do to hold dentures in place? I have heard of dental implants and would need to look into them more but is there any other options I could investigate or look into when retaining dentures so I can contrast and compare myself I fell like I am being a pest to my dentist. thank you.
